Spiritual Enquiry Workshop – Reflection

Dr. Ann Zubrick’s discernment approach through willingness, attentiveness, responsiveness.

I was fortunate to attend this workshop run by Ann Zubrick on a long-established Quaker tradition – Spiritual Enquiry. Spiritual Enquiry is a contemplative approach to finding God’s path for our lives. We began with a quiet centering to bring us to a deeper awareness of God in our midst.

Then Ann used poems, stories and activities to lead us through the three themes in discernment: willingness, attentiveness and responsiveness.

One of the activities we were given was to describe to a partner ‘how have I become the spiritual being I am today?’ This was a wonderful exercise to review the way God has worked in our lives previously, to see the pattern and show us how we have been attentive to that ‘still small voice’ in the past.

We also thought about ‘what has been the spiritual tweet of the week for me?’ – bringing our focus to God’s presence in our day to day lives, in the small things, in the encounters with others. We were given a series of questions to support our use of this process in the future.

The workshop was a wonderful experience of spiritual enquiry for me and I felt a deep sense of peace and awareness through the process. I really hope Dayspring will be able to host this workshop again next year.

We also had a feathery friend for most of the workshop and I felt inspired to write a psalm about him after the workshop.

Thank you Ann for a wonderful morning.
