A contemplative approach to life teaches us to be aware of the present moment. Mindful attentiveness to the layers behind the present moment soon reveals that our present moments impact far beyond what we see: to the people whose work has brought us the “stuff” of our moment, to the resources used in producing things for us to use and enjoy, to the energy needed to power our world, to the waste we leave behind us as we move to the next and next and next moment.
Whilst it is easy to be overwhelmed by the scale of our impact, individually and collectively, small changes are possible to change the trail we leave behind and the world we build for future generations.
At a recent presentation, Clare and Tyson Menck identified small steps to make a difference. Clare also shared a beautiful prayer meditation:
Loving God we say ‘yes’ to your world.
We say ‘yes’ to a future for our children and grandchildren.
We say ‘yes’ to community.
We say ‘yes’ to simplicity.
We say ‘yes’ to generosity.
We say ‘yes’ to creative solutions.
We say ‘yes’ to living more fully the lives you have entrusted to us.
We honour as your beloved people each individual our lives impact.
We thank you for your great ‘yes’ to us.
Clare writes a blog describing the “small steps” her family takes every month towards sustainability and her blog address is http://smallstepsforsustainability.blogspot.com.au/.
