LECTIO DIVINA

The process of Lectio Divina at a Pilgrims’ meeting:

The reading
  • The group selects a passage from the Sunday morning lectionary readings – usually the Gospel reading or a reading from the Pastoral Epistles.
  • Sit quietly and ask God to speak to you.
  • Someone reads the selected reading slowly and repetitively three times.
  • When a word or phrase attracts your attention, stop your thinking. This is the end of the reading for you.

The meditation
  • Slowly repeat to yourself over and over the word or phrase you have been given.
  • Take your time to listen to the words. Personalise them. Let them move your heart. What is God saying to you about your life, here and now?
What would the Father say to you (from the depth of his aching love for you)?
What would Jesus say to you (just like he talked to his friends and disciples in the Gospels)?
What would the Spirit say to you (inviting you to honest openness, life and wholeness)?
  • Write your thoughts and a prayer, thanking God for the insight and record any resolution you feel lead to make.
  • When the group is ready, share with them what God has been saying to you.
  • Listen attentively to each other, without interruption.
  • If time permits, pray for each other, and take those prayers with you into the liturgy of the week.

MUTUAL PRAYER
Mutual prayer before group sharing and discussion (Colloquio Divina)
As we share our present views
with each other in this group,
we realize we are all humans
journeying in dappled light,
with multiple shades of colour,
including black, white and grey.
We will listen with respect,
not holding each other to set views
or positions we might take now,
instead we offer the gift of listening love
and the treasure of our speech and journey
in our unique relationship with Christ.
We are open to each other, to listen;
open to ourselves, to clarify our thought;
and open to Christ,
who alone transforms us through deep, inviting love.  Amen.

Mutual prayer after group sharing and discussion (Colloquio Divina)
Having shared together
we affirm our commitment to hold the gift
of each other’s speech and thoughts in confidence,
and we honor our commitment
to not let difference divide us.
We affirm the presence of Christ
in each other,
and in our own selves.
We reaffirm our love for Christ
and each other
as the primary reason for our gathering together,
and the ultimate aspiration of our pilgrim journey.  Amen
